Updates from our work in Sierra Leone

We are scaling up to reach more young mothers. We are excited to welcome 20 new young mothers to the AdAmi Project from April. These girls have been selected to join our new 18 month workplace vocational training programme, where they will have the opportunity to gain on-the-job training and skills in key vocations such as mechanics, welding and tailoring. We have started a blog series following our Programme Manager Deborah as she works to set up the project. You can read the first post here.

Bo/Kenema Mothers Mean Business. Following a successful pilot last year, we are expanding our Bo/Kenema Mothers Mean Business initiative to support a further 41 girls to set up their very own micro-enterprises. The goal is to give the girls a means of earning a small income whilst they pursue their studies. In March the girls participated in a day of business management training and over the coming weeks will receive small grants to purchase the necessary items and materials for their businesses.

Celebrating International Women’s Day: on 8th March the girls came together to celebrate International Women’s Day. The girls enjoyed a morning of debate exploring gender roles and expectations, before a competitive game of football and some delicious food.

Launching of our new alumni and life skills programme: over the past few months we have been busy planning the set-up of a new alumni programme called the AdAmi Girls Network and a weekly health and life skills series. We were due to launch these activities in April but due to the group nature of these and the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak, we will be postponing the launch until further notice.

As always, we would like to say a huge TENKI to all of the wonderful trusts and foundations, individuals and companies supporting our work.

If you would like to get involved or make a gift then we’d love to hear from you!
